Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Sankalpa: A Meaningful Independence Day Tradition for Every Home

Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Sankalpa: A Meaningful Independence Day Tradition for Every Home

Every 15 August, the Tiranga rises across India—over schools, offices, public spaces and homes. It reminds us of the courage and sacrifice that gave our nation its freedom.

Through the Government of India’s Har Ghar Tiranga initiative, families are encouraged to bring the National Flag home and celebrate Independence Day with pride. But alongside displaying the Tiranga, the occasion can also invite a quieter, more personal question:

What promise can we make for India today?

From Har Ghar Tiranga to Har Ghar Sankalpa

A sankalpa is a heartfelt resolution made with clarity and purpose. While there is no traditionally prescribed puja for Independence Day, Indian families can mark the morning through a simple observance centred on gratitude, remembrance and responsibility.

Let the Tiranga outside our homes express our pride. Let the diya inside our homes awaken our responsibility.

A Simple Independence Day Ritual at Home

Begin by cleaning your puja space and arranging a deepa, flowers and incense on a puja thali.

Light the deepa in remembrance of the freedom fighters, soldiers, reformers and countless citizens whose courage shaped independent India. The flame can represent the values that must continue to guide us—knowledge, hope, unity and truth.

Observe a minute of silence and offer a prayer for the peace, wellbeing and progress of everyone in the country.

Families can also read the Preamble to the Constitution of India together. It is a meaningful way to introduce children to the ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity—and to reflect on how these values can be practised in everyday life.

Make a Sankalpa for India

Invite every member of the family to take one simple resolution. It could be:

  • Supporting Indian artisans and small businesses
  • Keeping the neighbourhood clean
  • Conserving water and reducing waste
  • Respecting people across languages, faiths and cultures
  • Helping educate someone
  • Learning about a lesser-known freedom fighter
  • Serving the community through an act of kindness

A promise does not have to be grand to be meaningful. When practised sincerely, even a small act can strengthen the nation.

Display the Tiranga with Respect

The National Flag should always be displayed with dignity and in accordance with the Flag Code of India. Keep it separate from the puja arrangement and do not use it as an altar cloth, decorative drape or backdrop. Avoid placing flowers, kumkum or other ritual offerings on the Flag.

The Tiranga is a national symbol to be honoured—not an object of worship.

Let Prayer Become Action

Independence Day is not only a celebration of the freedom we inherited. It is also a reminder of the responsibility we carry forward.

This 15 August, hoist the Tiranga with pride, light a deepa with gratitude and make a sankalpa with purpose. Complete the observance through seva—by helping someone, supporting a worthy cause or contributing to the community.

Har Ghar Tiranga. Har Ghar Sankalpa.

May every flag remind us of our shared freedom, and every flame inspire us to protect it through responsible action.

Wishing you and your family a meaningful Independence Day.

Jai Hind!
